this katakuchi, a bowl with a spout, is a vivid synergy of earth and fire 𓏲 crafted from sandy stoneware clay and brushed with a wood ash glaze that melts in the firing, creating unique strokes and subtle sprinkles across the surface. the texture is slightly rough 𓂃 grounding, tactile, and alive in the hands. it evokes images of sun-baked clay after rain, iron-rich soil opening and cracking.

𓏲 inside, a glossy glaze creates a smooth surface for whisking matcha or hojīcha.

i created this pitcher through an ancient way of handling ceramics: raw wood-ash glazing. i apply wood ash directly onto the unfired clay, so that glaze and clay meet before the first firing and enter the kiln together — one firing, no bisque stage. in the heat, wood ash melts and merges with the clay, forming natural, earthy, one-of-a-kind surfaces.
