deep ash gaiwan I (80ml)

shaped from dark stoneware clay and glazed entirely with wood ash, the gaiwan has a deep, matte surface reminiscent of charcoal, volcanic ground, and cooled lava sand ⌇with occasional patches of brown and subtle shimmer.

rough and earthy to the touch, it feels grounding in the hands. imagine holding a piece of rock... timeless.

the surface is slightly porous and may gradually take on the aroma of tea. for this reason, i suggest dedicating it to one category of tea – i especially love using it for dark teas such as pu-erh.

i created this gaiwan using an ancient approach to ceramic making called raw glazing. wood ash is applied directly onto the unfired clay, so the clay and glaze meet before entering the kiln together 𓂃 one firing, with no bisque stage. in the heat, the ash melts and merges with the clay, forming a natural, earthy surface that can never be repeated in quite the same way. 𓂃 this is a single piece, the only one of its kind 𓂃 capacity

80ml when filled to just below the lid
